Bedford is a town located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 12,595.

Bedford Geography:

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.9 km2 (13.9 mi2). 35.6 km2 (13.7 mi2) of it is land and 0.3 km2 (0.1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.94% water. Bedford is approximately 15 miles away from the coast.

Bedford Demographics:

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,595 people, 4,621 households, and 3,419 families residing in the town. The population density is 353.9/km2 (916.7/mi2). There are 4,708 housing units at an average density of 132.3/km2 (342.7/mi2). The racial makeup of the town is 91.19% White, 1.65% African American, 0.22% Native American, 5.40% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 1.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,621 households out of which 34.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% are non-families. 21.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 3.9% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $87,962, and the median income for a family is $101,081. Males have a median income of $65,697 versus $45,181 for females. The per capita income for the town is $39,212. 2.5% of the population and 1.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Bedford History:

Bedford was first settled in 1640 and was officially incorporated in 1729.

Bedford's flag (still on display at the Bedford Public Library) is the oldest complete flag known to exist in the United States. It is celebrated for having been the first U.S. flag flown during the Revolutionary War, as it is believed to have been carried by Nathaniel Page's outfit of Minutemen to the Old North Bridge in Concord for the Battle of Concord on April 19, 1775.
